Bengal is proud of her ancient terracotta art. Decorative terracotta tiles of the past centuries still adorn numerous temples and adjoining structures in Bankura. The bold local styles that the village artisans evolved operated as a great lever in the evolution of Bengal art, adding to the wealth and variety of colour and design. The traditional potters or "Khumbhakars" have been producing domestic and decorative items by moulding dry and burnt clay over the ages.

The Dokra or Dhokra group of tribal craftsmen who range through the landscapes of Bengal, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh – give us a timeless heritage of beautifully shaped and ornamented products of cast metals. Dokra system of metal casting is said to be oldest form of metal casting and is technically known as ‘cire perdue’ or lost wax process. A replica of the desired product is made with wax on a clay core with all its finer details of designs and decorations. In recent years, the product of Dokra artisans are in great demand in domestic and foreign market because of it primitive simplicity enchanting folk motifs and forceful form.

Stone Carving is an art form, which is in the process of extinction in the State. Stone carving calls for immaculate perfection. This craft reached high degree of perfection during the Pala dynasty. The Buddhist and Tantrik cult of that period have conceived their own god-form and the artisans devoted their innovative minds in carving exquisite images of Gods and Goddesses.

West Bengal is known for its creativity. Artisans of the state specialize in creating everyday fancy articles from bamboo and cane. Varieties of bamboo and cane products are available here. These are extensively used as handicrafts, apart from building thatched houses in the rural areas. The cane is heated and bent over a charcoal fire and then coiled together by the expert craftsmen giving them the required shape and size. The range of products vary from chairs, sofas, teapoys, hand bags, boxes for different uses. These products are noted for their elegant forms, attractive designs and fine craftsmanship

Brass and Bell Metal can be termed as the oldest craft of Bengal. Brass and Bell Metal are the alloys of Copper. Bengal artisans achieved high degree of skill and dexterity in producing articles of Brass and Bell Metal. The specialty of artisans of Bankura, Bishnupur, Ghatal and Chandanpur in Midnapore, lies in their skill in moulding of household products including bigger items like Kalas in Brass or Bell Metal. The smooth oval shape or strong angular points with outer engravings are evident in brass objects like pots, flower vase, lamp stands etc. They bear the testimony of aesthetic uniqueness.
